Introduction to Surah Al Masad

Surah Al-Masad, also known as Surah Al-Lahab, It contains a stern warning against Abu Lahab, an uncle of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and his wife, Umm Jamil, who were among the staunchest enemies of Islam during the early days of prophethood.

Why Was Surah Al Masad Revealed (Asbab al-n-Nuzul)?

Ibn ‘Abbas who said: “One day, the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, climbed al-Safa [hill] and shouted: ‘Come to me!’ And so all the Quraysh gathered around him.

They said: ‘What ails you?’ He said: ‘If I were to tell you that the enemy is going to attack you in the
morning or in the evening, would you not have believed me?’ They said: ‘Indeed, we would believe you’.

He said: ‘In that case, I am a warner sent to you against a tremendous chastisement’.

Surah Al Masad English Translation and Transliteration With Arabic

Condemned are the hands of Abee Lahab,and he is condemned. (تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ (١

   His wealth did not avail him, nor did what he acquired.      (مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ (٢

  He will burn in a Flaming Fire.                                          (3) سَيَصْلَى نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ

And his wife—the firewood carrier.                                 (4)وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ

Around her neck is a rope of thorns.                             (5) فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِنْ مَسَدٍ

Tafseer of Surah Al Masad Meaning in English (Verse by Verse)

(تَبَّتْ يَدَا أَبِي لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ (١

Perish, ruined be, the hands of Abū Lahab, in other words, all of him – the use of ‘hands’ here to denote [all of] him is figurative, and is because most actions are performed by them; the statement is an invocation – and perish he!,

May he be ruined! (this [tabba] is a predicate, as where one says, ahlakahu’Llāhu wa-qad halak, ‘God destroyed him and he indeed is destroyed’.

(مَا أَغْنَى عَنْهُ مَالُهُ وَمَا كَسَبَ (٢

His wealth will not avail him, nor what he has earned (wa-kasab means wa-kasbihi, that is to say, his sons .

(3) سَيَصْلَى نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ

He will [soon] enter a Fire of flames, that is to say, [a fire that is] flaming and ignited (this [statement] is the source of his nickname, [which was given to him] on account of his flaming reddish fair face).

 (4)وَامْرَأَتُهُ حَمَّالَةَ الْحَطَبِ

and his wife (wa’mra’atuhu is a supplement to the person [of the verb] yaslā, ‘he will enter’, separated by the clause of the direct object and its qualification) — and this was Umm Jamīl — the carrier (read hammālatu or hammālata) of firewood, cactus and thorns which she used to fling into the path of the Prophet (s).

(5) فِي جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِنْ مَسَدٍ

with a rope of palm-fibre around her neck (fī jīdihā hablun min masadin is a circumstantial qualifier referring to hammālata’l-hatab, which in turn is [either] a description of imra’atahu, ‘his wife’.

What Is The General Meaning of Surah Al Masad ?
