The beauty and greatness of Ayat Al-Kursi

The beauty and greatness of Ayat Al-Kursi

The Verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah, which is known as Ayat Al-Kursi in Arabic, is the greatest verse of the Quran. It enumerates qualities of Allah (SWT) and is described as one of the most significant verses in the Quran since it has been showering its people with many blessings and rewards.

The Verse and its Translation

  • Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He).
  • Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists).
  • Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
  • Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He).
  • Al-Hayyul-Qayyum (the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists).
  • Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.

The Meaning of the Word (Kursi)

  • Kursî: literally a footstool or chair, and sometimes wrongly translated as Throne.
  • The Kursî mentioned in this Verse should be distinguished from the ‘Arsh (Throne) mentioned in V.7:54, 10:3, 85:15 and elsewhere.
  • Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The Kursî compared to the ‘Arsh is nothing but like a ring thrown out upon open space of the desert.” If the Kursî extends over the entire universe, then how much greater is the ‘Arsh Indeed Allâh, the Creator of both the Kursî and the ‘Arsh , is the Most Great. {English Translation – Hilali and Khan}.

Its Protection and Blessings

  • Narrated Abu Umamah (RA):

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi at the end of every obligatory prayer, nothing but death will prevent him from entering Paradise.” [An-Nasa’i reported it, and Ibn Hibban graded it Sahih (authentic)].

And this indicates that if you persist in reciting it regularly then your destination would be paradise.

  • The protection of anyone who reads Ayat Al-Kursi is guaranteed by him every day.

As mentioned in The Prophet (PBUH) Hadith: {“When you go to bed, recite Ayat-ul- Kursi  for there will be a guardian appointed over you from Allah, and Satan will not be able to approach you till morning.” (Al-Bukhari)}. It is the only option given to a person to disbar Satan until the next day.

The Virtues of Ayat Al-Kursi

Ayat Al- Kursi contains the greatest name of Allah

Concerning the fact that it includes the greatest name of Allah, Imam Ahmad said: “It was narrated that Asma bint Yazid ibn al-Sakan said: ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) say about these two ayahs [al-Baqarah 2:255] and [Al ‘Imran 3:1-2] – that they contain the greatest name of Allah.’

Ayat Al- Kursi: It is never recited in a house but the Satan runs away

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed, Satan runs away from the house in which Sūrat al-Baqarah is recited.”                                                                                                                            Sahih/Authentic. – [Muslim]
