 Quiz

1. How should the small Alif in the word وَٱلۡعَٰدِيَٰتِ be recited?
2. What is the Tajweed rule applied to the letter (ب) in ضَبۡحٗا, and which other letters does this rule apply to?
3. Explain the rule of Madd Selah Saghrah as seen in the phrase بِهِۦ جَمۡعًا.
4. What is the rule for the Noon in the word إِنَّ?
5. Describe the rule of Ikhfaa Haqeqe as it applies to the word ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ.
6. What happens when one stops on the final letter (د) in a word like لَشَهِيدٞ?
7. Explain the rule known as Al-Madd Al-‘Aarid Lil Sukoon and provide an example.
8. What is the specific rule that applies when a Meem is followed by a Ba’a, as in the phrase رَبَّهُم بِهِمۡ?

Answer Key

1. The small Alif in وَٱلۡعَٰدِيَٰتِ is treated like a big Alif. It should be lengthened for two vowel counts, or two Haraks, which is a rule of Madd.
2. The rule applied to the letter (ب) in ضَبۡحٗا is Qalqalah, which is an echo or quick movement of the tongue or lips. The five letters of Qalqalah are ق, ط, ب, ج, and د.
3. Madd Selah Saghrah is applied in بِهِۦ جَمۡعًا because the Ha Salah (ــه) is not followed by a Hamzah. This rule requires lengthening the sound for two Haraks.
4. The word إِنَّ contains a Noon Mushaddad. This requires Ghunnah (a nasal sound) to be applied and lengthened for two vowel counts.
5. In ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ, the Noon Sakinah (ن) is followed by one of the 15 letters of Ikhfaa Haqeqe (in this case, س). In this rule, the Noon Sakinah is not pronounced from its Makhraj; only the Ghunnah is pronounced.
6. When stopping on the word لَشَهِيدٞ, the final letter (د) is made Sakinah (given a sukoon). Because (د) is a Qalqalah letter, the rule of Qalqalah (echo) must be applied.
7. Al-Madd Al-‘Aarid Lil Sukoon (Presented Sukoon) occurs when stopping on a word where a Madd letter is followed by the final letter, such as the (و) in ٱلۡقُبُورِ. The reciter stops with a sukoon on the final letter (ر), and the Madd can be lengthened for 2, 4, or 6 counts.
8. When a Meem is followed by a Ba’a, as in رَبَّهُم بِهِمۡ, the rule is Ikhfa’a Shafawe. This rule requires a Ghunnah of two vowels, and the Meem and Baa are pronounced together as one syllable.

Surah Al Adiyat Translation ( Tafseer ) :

وَٱلۡعَٰدِيَٰتِ ضَبۡحٗا                     By the races, panting,

فَٱلۡمُورِيَٰتِ قَدۡحٗا And the producers of sparks [when] striking

فَٱلۡمُغِيرَٰتِ صُبۡحٗا                And the charges at dawn,

فَأَثَرۡنَ بِهِۦ نَقۡعٗا Stirring up thereby [clouds of] dust,

فَوَسَطۡنَ بِهِۦ جَمۡعًا      Arriving thereby in the center, collectively,

إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودٞ   Indeed mankind, to his Lord, is ungrateful.

وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٞ And indeed, he is to that a witness.

وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلۡخَيۡرِ لَشَدِيدٌ And indeed he is, in love if wealth, intense.

أَفَلَا يَعۡلَمُ إِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِي ٱلۡقُبُورِ But doe he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered.

وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي ٱلصُّدُورِ            And that within the breasts is obtained,

إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّخَبِيرُۢ Indeed, their Lord with them, that Day, is [fully] Acquainted.

Tajveed (also spelled Tajweed) is the set of rules for correctly pronouncing the words of the Qur’an. It ensures that each letter is articulated from its proper place (makhraj) with the correct characteristics, like lengthening (madd), pauses, and emphasis. The purpose of Tajveed is to preserve the original pronunciation as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, allowing for clear, respectful, and accurate recitation. quran tutor AI is the best App for tajveed learning https://www.qurantutor.ai/
